OpenAI-compatible API in the EU: what to check

A practical checklist for EU AI APIs: processing routes, retention and ZDR, DPA, sub-processors, token pricing and SDK compatibility.

1. Check the complete processing route

An EU endpoint is not enough. Ask where prompts, outputs, logs and backups go, who operates each service, and whether a fallback can leave the EU. On razorBridge, only a model labelled EU-only carries that routing restriction. Other models may be processed outside the EU. Recheck the label when changing models.

2. Separate retention from residency

EU hosting does not mean zero data retention. Ask separately about prompt and output storage, abuse monitoring, support access, training use and deletion periods. A ZDR requirement must cover every processor in the route, including your own tracing and workflow tools. Obtain written terms for your use case before sending sensitive data.

3. Read the DPA and sub-processor list

Match the contracting entity, processing purpose, data categories and sub-processors to your actual integration. Check transfer arrangements, deletion and incident procedures with your privacy team. A model badge is a routing fact, not a statement that your application meets every legal obligation.

4. Compare the cost of your workload

Input and output tokens have separate rates. Estimate each separately: input tokens × input rate / 1M + output tokens × output rate / 1M. Include retrieved context, conversation history, retries and long answers. Check currency, VAT, account tier and credit requirements. The model pages show current catalogue rates; the account's applicable tier determines billing.

5. Test compatibility before switching traffic

Start with a short Chat Completions request. Then check streaming, tool calls, errors and output limits against your chosen model. An OpenAI-compatible chat endpoint does not promise support for every OpenAI API. Keep keys on your server, set an output limit, and inspect usage before increasing traffic.

Before you start

Does every model stay in the EU?

No. Check the residency label on the selected model. Models without the EU-only label may be processed outside the EU.

How do I make my first request?

Create an account, add prepaid credit and create an API key. Set the base URL, choose a currently listed model and send a Chat Completions request.

Does EU-only mean zero data retention?

No. Processing location and retention are separate questions. Review the DPA, sub-processors and retention terms for your intended use.
